I know as many of my readers who will still ask similar questions as Sebastian did.

In this post, I will explain to you all you need to know about biomedical Engineering and how you can become one.

What is biomedical Engineering?

What does one need to become a biomedical engineer?

We will first of all be talking about individual qualities required of everyone who aspires to become a biomedical engineer.

  • For someone to become a biomedical engineer, it is expected that the individuals must possess high IQ with proven records of excellent academic performance.

Biomedical engineering requires best brains due to the rigorous nature of the training involving complex mathematical calculations, ability to reason fast and logically.

  • Excellent problem solving skills
Biomedical Engineering, is not just a profession but a call to problem solving in the field of health and engineering. In the face of challenges, problems and unexpectedness, a biomedical engineer is expected to be confident and think reasonably in order to come out with the best solution.

Admission requirements into biomedical engineering courses in the university:

Undergraduate Admission:
In Nigeria, to get admitted into biomedical engineering BSc programs, credit pass in at least five secondary subjects including:
  1. English language
  2. Mathematics
  3. Chemistry
  4. Physics &
  5. Biology; these credit passes must be obtained in not more than two sittings.
The Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) subject combinations are:
  1. English language
  2. Mathematics
  3. Physics &
  4. Either of biology or chemistry.
Postgraduate Admission:
For admission into postgraduate Diploma, MSc and doctorate programs,
A smart university degree in Biomedical Engineering or Bioscience is required with a minimum CGPA of 3.00/5.00, while holders of Higher National Diploma (HND) in Biomedical Engineering are expected to have at least upper credit to qualify for admission into PGD programs.

In UK, admission to Medical engineering courses are offered through the centralized admission body known as Universities and Colleges Admission system (UCAS) or directly through the university websites.

Where can I work as a biomedical engineer

Biomedical Engineering is one of the highly sought career in the labour market.
Upon graduation, one can take up roles in the following areas;

In research laboratories for installation, and general maintenance of equipment
In universities as lecturers or technologists
Medical equipment procurement agencies
Industries etc.

Universities' offering biomedical engineering in Nigeria:

The following universities has the approval of the Nigeria University Commission to undertake undergraduate and postgraduate programs in biomedical engineering:
  • University of Port Harcourt
  • University of Lagos,
  • University of Calabar.
  • University of Ibadan
  • King David University of Medical Science,
  • Bella University, Ota,
  • College of Health Sciences, Ijero Ekiti,
  • Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria
  • University of Ilorin,
  • University of Nigeria, Nsukka,
  • Federal University of Technology, Owerri,
  • Achievers University, Owo,
Diploma programs in biomedical engineering are also offered by so many university teaching hospitals around Nigeria. We will update this page after making our findings.

How much does a biomedical engineer earn in Nigeria:

Independent biomedical engineers who practice on their own earn between ₦200,000 to ₦500,000 monthly while Federal, State or Private employers pay within the same scale.
Biomedical Engineers in UK, USA and other Western countries affirms that they earn between $3,000 to $6,000 monthly for entry level biomedical Engineers. While Chief Engineers with years of experiences and training earn between $7,000 to $10,000/Month.

What are the various specialization in biomedical Engineering:

Biomedical Engineering has various specialization or subdiscipline. They are:
  • Biomechanics,
  • Bioinformatics,
  • Tissue Engineering,
  • Biomedical optics

Biomedical Engineering and Bioengineering

Biomedical Engineering is a more  specialized form of Bioengineering. So, it is advisable you go for biomedical engineering if your career goal is to work on more clinical based areas. Bioengineering is a broader aspect of the discipline.
